Global Affordability Rankings Across Top Destinations

Travel costs vary significantly depending on the destination, with some regions consistently offering better overall value. This section compares how destinations rank when all major expenses are combined.

Flourish

Latin America stands out as the most budget-friendly region in the ranking, with Bogotá, Panama City, and Medellín taking the top three spots for affordability. These cities benefit from relatively low costs across flights, accommodations, and everyday expenses, making them strong options for travelers looking to maximize value.

Mexico and the Caribbean also deliver strong overall affordability. Cancun ranks fourth, while Montego Bay comes in fifth, showing that popular vacation spots can still offer competitive pricing across multiple categories.

At the other end of the spectrum, Sydney, Zurich, and Santorini rank as the least affordable destinations of the cities analyzed. High prices across flights, lodging, dining, and transportation contribute to their consistently elevated travel costs.

Dining costs show one of the widest gaps globally. In Cairo, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant can cost as little as $2.50, while a similar meal in Zurich can cost significantly more, exceeding $35.

Accommodation prices also vary dramatically. Bali offers the lowest lodging costs in the analysis, with a five-night stay averaging $594, making it one of the most budget-friendly destinations for extended trips.

Some long-haul destinations, including Tokyo and Bali, may have higher upfront flight costs but offer relatively low daily expenses once travelers arrive. This balance can make them more affordable overall than expected.

In contrast, Mexico City ranks as the most expensive destination for lodging, with average accommodation costs reaching $6,195 for a five-night stay, significantly impacting total trip budgets.

Methodology

To identify the most affordable international destinations for US summer travelers, we analyzed 52 major global cities across four cost categories. Cities were selected based on the availability of complete data across all metrics. Each city was scored on the following factors:

Average flight cost (35%): Economy-class round-trip fares were collected from Kayak.com for July 25–30, 2026, from five major US departure airports: JFK (New York), LAX (Los Angeles), MIA (Miami), ORD (Chicago), and DFW (Dallas), and averaged to represent a national baseline.

Airbnb lodging cost (30%): The median total price for a 5-night Airbnb stay (July 25–30, 2026) was calculated from available listings in each city. Listings priced above $10,000 for the stay were excluded to remove luxury and villa inventory not representative of typical traveler accommodations. The median was used rather than the mean to further reduce the influence of high-priced outliers on each city's representative lodging cost.

Meal cost (25%): The price of a meal at an inexpensive restaurant, sourced from Numbeo's Cost of Living database.

Local transportation cost (10%): The cost of a single one-way public transit ticket, sourced from Numbeo's Cost of Living database.

Each metric was min-max normalized on a 0–1 scale, where 1 represents the lowest cost. A weighted composite score was then calculated to produce the final ranking.

All data was collected in April 2026. Flight prices and Airbnb rates reflect availability at the time of query and are subject to change. Numbeo cost-of-living data is crowd-sourced and updated continuously.
