About Wickes

Wickes has its roots as a one-stop shop for construction and building supplies, dating back to the company of the same name, which began in the United States in the 1950s. The company itself had existed as a business as far back as 1854. The company opened its first store in the UK in 1972 in Whitefield, Manchester. At the time, it was an innovative concept for the UK to turn the DIY retail model into a store that sold to construction companies. It was the first merchant to serve builders in the UK with a fixed-price outlet. In the 40 years since its first store opened, Wickes has expanded to more than 230 stores across the UK, continuing to lead the builder merchant retail sector.
