Buy your special someone a small token of appreciation just to make them smile. Or if that does not work, give them the gift they have always wanted and have never been able to acquire. For children, handmade gifts can be the best signs of love and respect for grandparents. Schools can create the prefect crafty projects for students to give their beloved elders. With luck, your child’s school will have a day where their grandparent or another special someone can enjoy lunch with their children and spread the love around.

What We Like About National Grandparents’ Day

Enjoying quality time with the people who loved you first is an experience that most people do not get. The adoption of this observance resulted from the need to celebrate and appreciate the contributions that past generations have made and continue to make. In the unfortunate event that you no longer have grandparents or elders within your family, National Grandparents’ Day is a day to take a moment and pay respects to any elders you know to have made a positive contribution to your community.

History of National Grandparents’ Day

The origin of National Grandparents’ Day comes from various sources. It is actually a day for observance in comparison to other holidays. President Jimmy Carter officially declared the first Sunday of September after Labor Day to be devoted to the observance of National Grandparents’ Day. Though many people made declarations for why the day should be observed, the presidential proclamation made it understood. The proclamation is repeated yearly, but the day is still the same. Marian McQuade is the woman behind the last push to make the observation of National Grandparents’ Day happen. The official flower of National Grandparents’ Day is the Forget Me Not, and the official song is “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” by Johnny Prill.
