Americans first celebrated Earth Day in the 1970s. While the day started out as an American holiday, countries all over the world have celebrated Earth Day as a universal holiday. During Earth Day, people attend various events and learn about issues affecting the environment like pollution, excess waste and climate change. Without Earth Day, millions of people might have never learned about the importance of sustainable living.

DIY Activities for Earth Day
Get into the Earth Day spirit by taking part in affordable DIY activities. Here are just a few of the ways you can celebrate this unique holiday.
Attend a Free Event
Check the newspaper or look on social media to see if you have any free Earth Day events going on in your area. You might be able to take part in online events as well as in-person celebrations. You could even host your own event if you have the resources.
Learn How Much Waste You Produce Each Day
Keep track of everything you throw away in a single day. This might include napkins, paper towels, plastic packaging, Styrofoam, paper, bottles, soda cans and more. When you realize how much you waste in a single day, you might feel motivated to reduce your waste and invest in biodegradable products.
Invest in a Multiuse Grocery Bag
You can find countless bags for affordable prices online. Some grocery stores also sell branded bags that you can buy when you check out. This helps you reduce your use of plastic and paper bags. Plus, cloth bags are much sturdier than the plastic bags you get at the store.
Support Sustainable Retailers
Make a difference all yearlong by supporting sustainable retailers like Patagonia, Made Trade and thegreenlabels. You can find many more retailers by doing some research online.
What to Do on Earth Day
If you haven't already, Earth Day gives you the perfect opportunity to start helping the environment. Below are just a few of the things you can do in your everyday life:
- Collect newspapers, magazines, glass bottles and other recyclables and bring them to the nearest recycling center.
- Buy more fresh ingredients instead of prepackaged ingredients that create unnecessary plastic waste.
- Invest in biodegradable products made from cotton, wool, hemp and other natural materials.
- Buy multiuse products like reusable containers instead of Ziploc bags.
- Use reusable bags at the grocery store instead of plastic bags.
- Walk to nearby places instead of taking your car whenever possible.
- Browse secondhand stores instead of buying everything new.
- Limit your water consumption by running the faucet or shower only when you absolutely need it.
- Reduce your meat consumption and buy ingredients from family-owned farms instead of factory farms.
- Look for vegan alternatives made from plants instead of meat and dairy.
- Brew your own coffee every day instead of using throwaway pods.
- Invest in an electric vehicle and energy-efficient appliances for your home.
- Replace your old lightbulbs with more efficient LED bulbs.
What We Like About Earth Day
Modern humans have polluted the environment more than any other species in history. Every year, Americans waste millions of tons of resources on single-use packaging, harsh chemicals and pollutants, non-biodegradable products, factory farms, mass production, gas-powered transportation and other aspects of their daily lives. Most people have no idea how much garbage they accumulate in their lifetimes. For some people, a single day's worth of trash is enough to fill an entire garbage can—and when they throw it out, the trash sits in landfills for centuries.
In recent years, scientists and conservationists have tried to educate people about the importance of saving the planet. Some businesses have launched "Go Green" initiatives that use less waste and focus on sustainable products. Others work directly with sustainable farms instead of mass factory farms that pollute the environment. As individuals, millions of American citizens have bought biodegradable products, invested in electric vehicles and made efforts to reduce their waste as much as possible.
Unfortunately, issues like mass consumption and climate change continue to threaten the environment. Every year, millions of people around the globe celebrate Earth Day to bring awareness to environmental issues. This day gives people the chance to celebrate the planet, appreciate everything it's done for humanity and remind themselves that they only have one Earth—and it's their job to take care of it.
History of Earth Day
Earth Day, first held in 1970, was born out of the environmental movement of the 1960s. Books like Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" (1962) and disasters like the oil spill off the Santa Barbara coast in January of 1969 helped spur Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson to take action. He recruited activists to organize and hold teach-ins on college campuses around the country about the importance of conservation. The date chosen for the first teach-in was April 22, 1970. Earth Day is held on April 22 each year in recognition of the first event.
