The origin of National Grandparents’ Day comes from various sources. It is actually a day for observance in comparison to other holidays. President Jimmy Carter officially declared the first Sunday of September after Labor Day to be devoted to the observance of National Grandparents’ Day. Though many people made declarations for why the day should be observed, the presidential proclamation made it understood. The proclamation is repeated yearly, but the day is still the same. Marian McQuade is the woman behind the last push to make the observation of National Grandparents’ Day happen. The official flower of National Grandparents’ Day is the Forget Me Not, and the official song is “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” by Johnny Prill. Many other countries also celebrate a similar day dedicated to their grandparents and elderly loved ones.
National Grandparents’ Day has been celebrated often in recent history. If you attended a public school, you may have had the opportunity to enjoy lunch with your grandmother and grandfather at school to celebrate.
National Grandparents’ Day was set up to honor and encourage those generations that have come before to lead the current generation.
The first Sunday in September after Labor Day is the day to look for the proclamation of National Grandparents’ Day every year. It will be celebrated on Sept. 11 in 2022.
