All About Walmart’s Return Policy (And Tips!)

Walmart is the preferred retail store for many consumers around the world. In 2021, the corporation had over 11,000 stores in 24 countries.

With so many Walmart stores in different locations, it’s essential for consumers to know the ins and outs of its return policies for both online and in-store purchases.

This article will cover Walmart’s Return Policy in-depth and, explain which items can be returned, when they need to be returned, and give you some useful tips to make the return process easier.

What is Walmart’s Return Policy?

After having only accepted certain returns during the Covid-19 pandemic, in March 2021 Walmart referred back to its standard return policy in most states.

For most items, Walmart gives you 90-days to return them. Walmart’s website states that:

However, Walmart’s 90-Day Return Policy doesn’t apply to all of its items, and some items need to be returned within 14, 30, and 60 days of purchase. We’ll get into these items later.

How to return an in-store purchase

All items that are bought in a Walmart store need to be returned in person. To return the item, you’ll need your receipt, which you can take to the customer service desk (usually located at the front of the store).

If you paid with a debit card, Walmart will give you the option to put the refund back on your card or be paid in cash. However, if you paid with a credit card, Walmart will only apply your refund on that same credit card.

How to return an online purchase

Walmart.com is an online store owned by Walmart Inc. that focuses on national sales. In 2021, the online store generated over $53 million in sales, almost entirely from the United States.

To return an item that was purchased on walmart.com, you can either return it to Walmart via mail or in person.

Start the return process by going to walmart.com/return. From here, you’ll be able to enter your receipt’s TC number to initiate the return process. Remember to take your receipt if you’re returning your item in-store.

Alternatively, if you’re returning it via mail, you need to print the “Stores Return Receipt” that can be found underneath your order, which is listed on your account page. Here, you’ll also find shipping labels that you can print.

How to return an item without a receipt

Though receipts undoubtedly make the return process easier, you can still return most items without a receipt within 90 days.

To do so, you’ll need to show your government-issued ID (making sure that the ID matches the information in Walmart’s database).

If the ID that Walmart has on its database doesn’t match the one that you have, make sure to update it before the return.

In most cases, you’ll receive a Walmart gift card to make up for the return and will only get a cash refund for items over $25.

The following items require a receipt to be returned:

  • Meat
  • Flowers
  • Produce
  • Bakery items
  • Deli items
  • Car batteries
  • Frozen goods
  • Home and garden equipment

How to return damaged items

Walmart accepts returns and exchanges for damaged, broken, or defective items. You can bring items purchased in-store to a Walmart near you to exchange for another identical item or get a refund in your original form of payment.

If an item that you purchased on walmart.com is damaged, you can return it by mail or at a Walmart store for a refund.

How to return large items

You can return some large items in-store. However, you’ll be responsible for getting it to the store, either by taking it yourself or via freight.

Keep in mind that Walmart may not want to take the item back due to the added stress and steep restocking fees.

Should I return my item to a specific Walmart store?

Most items purchased in the U.S. from Walmart or walmart.com can be returned at any Walmart location in the United States. Luckily, there are thousands of Walmart stores in the U.S., with Texas, Florida, and California alone having over 1,300 stores combined.

One exception to this rule is items bought from a Walmart third-party seller or dealer. Though many of these items are refundable or eligible for exchanges, the decision lies with the particular dealer.

Useful tips for returns at Walmart

Here are three helpful tips to make your returns easier:

1. Use a credit or debit card

In 2021, 37% of U.S. consumers used debit cards to pay for their purchases, and a further 32% used credit cards.

If you use a card to make your purchase, it’ll be so much easier to find your receipt quickly. To find your receipt, you can visit the Walmart Receipt Lookup page on Walmart’s website.

After selecting the right store, you’ll need to insert your purchase date, card type, last four digits, and receipt total. If you don’t have this information, you can find it using your card statement.

2. Don’t go during peak hours

If you want to make an in-store return, consider going to the store early in the morning or early afternoon to avoid peak hours.

Some stores even offer 24/7 service, meaning that you can go in the evenings. However, since the store may only have staff who can help you with returns available during certain hours, it’s a good idea to call your local store to find out if they can help you during later hours.

3. Stay patient

It’s easy to become frustrated when you purchase a product that you later realize you don’t need or that’s damaged since you’ll have to take time out of your day to return it.

The same can be said for employees when they need to help you return an item.

Therefore, it’s important to maintain a good attitude and be cooperative when returning an item. This way, the process will go much smoother and quicker, and it’ll be more enjoyable for all parties involved.
